Listening to the Past

A MOMENT IN GOD'S WORD
Read Hebrews 11:4.
In earlier times, prominent Christian people were recognized for their accomplishments by being buried inside a church. Traveling through Italy we visited numerous churches where men and women who dot the pages of history books are entombed. In St. Peter's Basilica in Rome lies Pope John XXIII who convened Vatican II in which Catholics were encouraged to make Bible study a central part of their lives. In Assisi, St. Francis is buried. Francis helped bring the teachings of Scripture to the common person in the 13th century and advocated a life of simplicity as opposed to the accumulation of wealth. In Florence, we saw the graves of the great artist Michelangelo, the eminent scientist Galileo, and the infamous politician Machiavelli in the Basilica di Santa Croce.
As I strolled among the beautiful architecture and artwork snapping photos of the tombs of these well-known people, today's verse filled my thoughts. Centuries after these people lived we still reap the benefits of their contributions to mankind. Perhaps this same idea motivated the writer of Hebrews to make this commentary on Abel's legacy of faith. Countless centuries have passed since this son of Adam pleased God with his sacrifice. During this time scholars have debated why Abel's offering was more acceptable than the fruits of his brother Cain. However, today's verse makes clear that Abel was honored because of his faith.
Everyone should strive to leave a lasting contribution for those who follow. You may be a talented artist or an ingenious scientist or a loyal employee. God has gifted you as a unique individual and for this gift you should feel blessed. But no matter what special legacy you may leave, nothing could rank higher than this epithet: "By faith he (or she) still speaks, even though he (or she) is dead." How memorable are your deeds of faith?
