Nothing in life demands more scrutiny than our pain. It just shouts to be noticed. When our pain, physical or emotional, is at full throttle, we can scarcely think of anything else. The experience of suffering has caused many people to question the benevolence and even the existence of God. Some people have argued that a good God would certainly not allow suffering to occur as it does in our world. The book of Job is an ancient effort to address this very question. The bulk of this long book is comprised of dialogues between the suffering man, Job, and his supposed comforters.
